Glass Balustrade FAQ

Everything you need to know about bespoke glass balustrades — costs, regulations, materials and timelines.

Glass balustrade costs in the UK depend on the system type, glass specification and linear meterage. Framed glass systems start from £350 per metre and frameless systems from £450 per metre, supplied and installed. External and balcony railings also start from £450 per metre. The final price depends on glass thickness, fixing substrate, access requirements and any bespoke elements. At Continox, we provide a fixed-price quotation following a free on-site survey — no estimates, no surprises.
Under Approved Document K, minimum balustrade heights in the UK are: 900mm for ground floor domestic use and stairs, and 1100mm for elevated positions (above ground floor) and all commercial applications. These are minimum requirements — many architects and designers specify taller balustrades for aesthetic or safety reasons. See our Glass Balustrade Regulations guide for full details.
Glass thickness depends on the system type and load requirements. Frameless balustrades typically require 17.5mm to 25mm toughened & laminated glass — the laminated construction ensures the glass remains in place if broken, providing residual load capacity. Framed systems use 10–12mm toughened glass where the frame provides structural support. All glass is specified to BS EN 12150 (toughened) or BS EN 14449 (laminated) and UKCA marked.
In most cases, internal glass balustrades and like-for-like external replacements do not require planning permission and fall under permitted development. However, listed buildings, conservation areas and new external structures may require planning approval. Building Regulations approval (Part K) is separate from planning and applies to most new balustrade installations. We recommend confirming with your local planning authority for any external works.
Frameless balustrades use thicker toughened & laminated glass panels (17.5–25mm) fixed with near-invisible patch fittings or a channel system — delivering a clean, minimalist aesthetic with no visible metalwork. Framed systems use a steel or aluminium frame with thinner glass (10–12mm) — offering greater structural rigidity, a defined architectural line, and a slightly lower cost. Both systems are fully Part K and BS 6180 compliant.
Lead time from survey to installation is typically 4–6 weeks. This includes on-site survey, structural calculations, CAD drawings, glass fabrication and delivery scheduling. Installation itself usually takes 1–3 days depending on the size and complexity of the project. We'll confirm a precise timeline when we provide your fixed-price quotation.
Yes — the majority of our projects involve retrofitting glass balustrades to existing staircases, landings and balconies. During our free on-site survey, we assess the existing substrate (concrete, steel, timber or masonry), confirm structural fixing points and design a system that suits the existing conditions. All fixing details are structurally engineered for your specific substrate.
Yes. All Continox glass balustrades use toughened or toughened & laminated safety glass — tested to BS EN 12150 and BS EN 14449. Toughened glass is approximately four times stronger than standard glass and fractures into small, blunt fragments. Laminated glass contains an interlayer that holds fragments in place if broken — maintaining a barrier until replacement. All systems are structurally engineered to BS 6180 load requirements and comply with Part K.
Glass balustrades are low maintenance. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth and a mild glass cleaner or warm soapy water is sufficient for most installations. For external systems, a periodic rinse with clean water helps prevent mineral deposits. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads which can scratch the glass surface. Metal fixings and frames should be wiped down periodically — stainless steel components may benefit from an occasional application of stainless steel cleaner.
New glass balustrade installations in England & Wales are subject to Approved Document K (protection from falling) and typically require Building Regulations compliance. This means the system must meet minimum height, load and glass specification requirements. For new builds and major refurbishments, Building Control sign-off will be required. Continox provides all structural calculations, CAD drawings and a Declaration of Performance — everything needed for Building Control submission. See our Glass Balustrade Regulations guide for full details.

What Is a Glass Balustrade?

A glass balustrade is a safety barrier system consisting of toughened or laminated glass panels — fixed using a frame, post system or channel — designed to prevent falls from staircases, landings, mezzanines, balconies and elevated walkways. Unlike traditional timber or metal railings, glass balustrades provide full visual openness, allowing light to flow freely and preserving sightlines across a space.

In the UK, all glass balustrades must comply with Approved Document K (protection from falling), BS 6180 (barriers in and about buildings) and BS EN 12150 or BS EN 14449 for glass specification. For a full breakdown of what the regulations require, see our Glass Balustrade Regulations UK guide.

Why Choose a Glass Balustrade?

Glass balustrades have become one of the most popular specification choices for architects, developers and homeowners across the UK — and for good reason. The combination of clean aesthetics, safety performance and low maintenance makes them suitable for virtually any application, from a residential staircase to a commercial mezzanine.

Light: Glass panels maximise natural light flow — particularly valuable in open-plan interiors and stairwells. Design: Frameless systems create a seamless, minimalist appearance that complements contemporary architecture. Durability: Toughened and laminated glass is highly resistant to impact and weathering. Value: A well-specified glass balustrade adds demonstrable value to residential and commercial properties.

Frameless Glass Balustrades for Residential Properties

Frameless glass balustrades are the preferred choice for high-end residential projects — new builds, extensions, loft conversions and refurbishments. The absence of visible metalwork creates a clean, uninterrupted aesthetic that works particularly well with floating staircases, open-plan living spaces and large-format glazing.

Continox designs and installs bespoke frameless glass balustrades for homeowners across the UK, using 17.5mm to 25mm toughened & laminated glass with near-invisible patch fittings or a recessed channel system. Every installation is custom-measured and engineered to your exact staircase or landing configuration. For staircase design inspiration, see our Modern Staircase Ideas UK guide.

Glass Balustrades for Commercial & Development Projects

For commercial applications — offices, retail units, hotels, apartment developments and mixed-use schemes — glass balustrades deliver a premium finish while meeting the more demanding structural requirements of public and high-occupancy spaces.

Under BS 6180, commercial balustrades must withstand a horizontal load of 3.0 kN/m — significantly higher than the 0.74 kN/m residential requirement. Continox provides full structural engineering and load calculations for every commercial project, ensuring compliance without compromise on design. Our framed glass systems offer the structural rigidity required for high-traffic environments, while maintaining the visual quality expected by developers and end users alike.

Glass Balustrade Cost UK — What to Expect

Glass balustrade pricing in the UK is typically quoted on a per-linear-metre basis, covering supply, fabrication and installation. Framed glass systems start from £350 per metre and are generally the most cost-effective option — the frame provides structural support, allowing thinner glass (10–12mm toughened) and lower material costs. Frameless systems start from £450 per metre and use thicker toughened & laminated glass (17.5–25mm) with specialist fixing hardware.

Final cost is influenced by several factors: the total linear metres required, glass specification (standard toughened vs. toughened & laminated), fixing substrate (concrete, steel, timber or masonry), access requirements, and any bespoke design elements such as custom handrails or curved glass panels. Unlike many suppliers, Continox provides a fixed-price quotation following a free on-site survey — so the price you receive is the price you pay, with no post-installation variations.

Balcony & External Glass Railings — Weather-Resistant Systems

External glass balustrades and balcony railings present different engineering challenges to internal systems — exposure to wind loading, rain, UV and temperature fluctuations requires careful material selection and fixing design. Continox specifies weather-resistant stainless steel fixings, appropriate sealants and either toughened or toughened & laminated glass depending on the structural requirements of the application.

For balcony railings specifically, the system must also comply with the balustrade height requirements of Part K and — where the balcony forms part of a new build or significant refurbishment — the requirements of Approved Document B regarding means of escape. Continox manages all compliance documentation for external installations as standard. For more information on balcony railing specifications, see our Balcony Railings page.
