Balcony Railing Building Regulations UK | Continox

Balcony Railing Building Regulations UK

Every Continox balcony railing is designed and installed in full compliance with BS 6180, UK Building Regulations Part K and Part B — protecting you, your property and your occupants.

What the regulations mean for your balcony

Any balcony, terrace or raised platform with a drop greater than 600mm must be guarded by a railing or balustrade under UK Building Regulations Part K. The primary standard governing the design and performance of balcony railings in the UK is BS 6180:2011 — Barriers in and about Buildings.

BS 6180 sets out the structural load requirements that balcony railings must withstand — including horizontal imposed loads from people leaning against or pushing on the railing. For residential properties, the minimum imposed load is 0.74 kN/m; for commercial or public-access balconies this increases to 3.0 kN/m. All Continox balcony railings are structurally calculated to meet or exceed these requirements.

For buildings with multiple occupancies — such as HMOs, apartment blocks or commercial premises — railings must also comply with Approved Document B (fire safety), ensuring that balcony railings do not impede escape routes or contribute to fire spread.

Continox manages all compliance documentation as standard — including structural load calculations, fixing specifications and Building Control submissions. Your project is covered from the first fixing to final sign-off.

Balcony Railings FAQ | Continox

Balcony Railings FAQ

Everything you need to know about bespoke balcony railings — costs, regulations, materials and timelines.

Bespoke steel balcony railings typically cost between £150 and £400 per linear metre, depending on design complexity, material finish and fixing requirements. A standard residential balcony of 4–6 metres would typically cost between £800 and £2,500 fully installed. All prices include design, fabrication and installation. Continox provides a free fixed-price quotation following an on-site survey.

Under UK Building Regulations Part K and BS 6180:2011, balcony railings must be a minimum of 1100mm high above finished floor level. This applies to any raised area with a drop greater than 600mm. Railings must also be designed so no opening permits passage of a 100mm sphere — the standard child safety requirement.

In most cases, replacing or installing balcony railings on an existing balcony falls under permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, Building Regulations approval is required under Part K and BS 6180. Listed buildings, conservation areas or new balcony structures may need additional consent. Continox advises on all compliance requirements as part of your free consultation.

Mild steel with hot-dip galvanising and powder coating is the most popular choice for UK balcony railings — durable, weather-resistant and available in any RAL colour. Stainless steel grade 316 is ideal for coastal locations or premium finishes. Both materials comply with BS EN ISO 12944 corrosion protection standards and require minimal maintenance.

From initial enquiry to completed installation, Continox typically delivers bespoke balcony railings within 3–6 weeks. This includes the free site survey and quotation (Week 1), design approval (Week 2), fabrication (Weeks 2–4), and installation which typically takes 1 day on site for a standard residential balcony. We confirm a precise timeline at the design stage.

Yes — Continox installs bespoke balcony railings on all types of structures including concrete, steel, timber and masonry. We conduct a full structural assessment during the site survey to determine the appropriate fixing method and ensure the host structure can support the required loads under BS 6180. All fixings are engineered specifically for your balcony.

Continox powder-coats all steel balcony railings in any RAL colour. Popular choices include RAL 9005 Jet Black, RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, RAL 9010 Pure White and RAL 8017 Chocolate Brown. Hot-dip galvanised finishes are also available for maximum corrosion resistance, or combination finishes for a premium result.

Yes. All Continox balcony railings come with a workmanship guarantee covering fabrication and installation. Steel elements are finished to BS EN ISO 12944 corrosion protection standards, and all powder-coated finishes are tested for adhesion and impact resistance before leaving our workshop. Aftercare support is included as standard.

Balcony Railings UK – Continox

Bespoke Steel Balcony Railings Built for the UK Climate

Balcony railings are one of the most visible and safety-critical elements of any property. Whether you're replacing rusted ironwork on a Victorian terrace, adding guarding to a new-build balcony, or specifying railings for a commercial development — the quality of design, fabrication and installation makes all the difference.

At Continox, we design and install bespoke steel balcony railings across the UK for residential and commercial clients. Every project starts with a free on-site survey — we assess your balcony structure, take accurate measurements and discuss your design preferences before producing a fixed-price quotation. No surprises, no hidden costs.

All our balcony railings are fabricated in mild steel and finished in a hot-dip galvanised primer coat before powder coating in any RAL colour of your choice. This two-stage process provides exceptional corrosion resistance — essential for UK weather conditions — and ensures a long-lasting, low-maintenance finish that looks as good in ten years as it does on the day of installation.

Unlike many railing suppliers, Continox handles every stage of your project in-house — from the initial design drawing through to the final fixing on site. Our fabrication team and installation team work together from the outset, meaning every component is built to fit and every fixing is structurally engineered for your specific balcony type.

Balcony Railing Styles & Finishes

Continox fabricates steel balcony railings in a wide range of styles — from simple vertical bar designs to more architectural configurations with flat plate infills, horizontal rails or combined steel and glass panels. Every design is drawn up specifically for your property and submitted for your approval before fabrication begins.

Our most popular finish is RAL 9005 Jet Black powder coat over hot-dip galvanised steel — a clean, contemporary look that suits both period and modern properties. We also regularly supply RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, RAL 9010 Pure White and custom colours to match existing ironwork or architectural metalwork on the building.

  • Vertical Bar Railings — classic steel uprights, any spacing, any height
  • Horizontal Rail Designs — contemporary flat bar or round bar configurations
  • Flat Plate Infill Railings — solid steel panels for privacy and wind protection
  • Steel & Glass Combinations — steel posts with glass infill panels
  • Juliet Balcony Railings — guarding for French doors and full-height openings
  • Powder Coat Colours — any RAL colour, satin or matt finish
