Floating Staircase

Open Tread Floating Staircase with Glass Balustrade

The floating staircase remains the most requested design in contemporary UK homes. Open treads with no visible risers create a sense of weightlessness and allow light to travel freely between floors. Paired with a frameless glass balustrade, the result is a staircase that feels architectural rather than functional — a centrepiece rather than a corridor.

Steel Plates

Steel Plates Staircase – Bold Industrial Design

Where the central spine is architectural minimalism, the steel plates staircase is bold and structural. Solid steel plate stringers are left visible and proud — powder-coated in any RAL colour. Full-height frameless glass panels with point-fixed chrome fittings complete the look. Ideal for homes where the staircase is meant to make a statement of material honesty.

Glass Balustrade

Frameless Glass Balustrade – Maximum Light & Space

Nothing opens up a staircase like a frameless glass balustrade. With no visible posts or rails interrupting the sightline, the glass appears to float alongside the staircase — letting natural light travel freely through the space. Point-fixed with brushed stainless steel spider fittings, the system is as structurally robust as it is visually minimal.

Modern Staircase Ideas – FAQ

The central spine staircase is our most requested design — and the most consistently popular across the UK in 2026. A single structural steel beam supports each tread on both sides, creating a cantilevered floating effect that works in virtually any interior. Paired with a frameless glass balustrade and solid oak treads, it delivers an architectural centrepiece that transforms any hallway. See our central spine range from £9,500.
Bespoke modern staircases start from £7,900 for a floating staircase and £9,500 for a central spine design — both including design, 3D visuals, manufacture and professional installation. Fully bespoke designs start from £11,500. See our full bespoke staircase cost guide for a complete breakdown by type, shape and specification.
At Continox we use a curated combination of structural steel (for the spine, stringers or plate frames), solid European oak or walnut treads (60mm thick, prime grade), and toughened or laminated glass for the balustrade (10–17.5mm depending on specification). The steel frame is powder-coated in any RAL colour — matte black, anthracite and dark grey are most popular. All materials are selected for durability, aesthetics and compliance with UK Building Regulations Part K.
The typical timeline from first enquiry to installation is 6–8 weeks for standard designs. This covers the free on-site survey, design development, 3D visualisation and approval, manufacture and installation scheduling. Fully bespoke or complex projects typically take 8–12 weeks. Installation itself takes 2–3 days for most residential staircases.
Yes — every Continox staircase is designed and installed in full compliance with UK Building Regulations Part K (Protection from Falling, Collision and Impact). This covers tread dimensions, headroom, handrail heights, balustrade openings and pitch. We manage all Building Control documentation, structural calculations and inspection sign-off as standard. See our UK Staircase Building Regulations guide for full details.
Yes — detailed 3D visualisations are included as standard in every Continox project. Our design team creates accurate renders of your staircase in your actual space so you can see exactly how the finished design will look before a single component is cut.
