Why Panel Weight Matters on Site

Manual handling: HSE guidance treats 25kg as the practical one-person limit under good conditions — and carrying glass is never good conditions, because the load is rigid, fragile at the edges and must stay vertical. In practice: under 25kg one person with a suction lifter, 25–50kg two people, 50–100kg a three-to-four person team or mechanical aids, and above 100kg — which includes most 21.5mm+ laminated balustrade panels over 1.5m wide — a glass-lifting robot, vacuum hoist or crane. Upper-floor balcony installations frequently need mechanical lifting regardless of weight, purely for access.

Structural preparation: the weight doesn't disappear after installation. A 10-metre frameless run in 21.5mm laminated glass puts over half a tonne of dead load on the floor edge or deck subframe — one of the checks in a proper balustrade load calculation, and a reason spigot fixings into lightweight decking sometimes need subframe reinforcement before the glass arrives.

Delivery access is a pricing factor, not an afterthought. A panel that two people can walk through a hallway costs less to install than one that needs a vacuum lifter over a garden wall. 30kg per square metre. Glass weighs 2.5kg/m² per millimetre of thickness, so 12mm × 2.5 = 30kg/m². A typical 1,200 × 1,100mm balustrade panel in 12mm toughened weighs about 39.6kg — a two-person lift.
No. Toughening is a heat treatment that changes the internal stress profile of the glass, not its density or dimensions. A 10mm toughened panel weighs exactly the same as a 10mm annealed panel of the same size — 25kg/m².
Sum the glass plies at 2.5kg/m² per mm and add roughly 1.6kg/m² for a standard 1.52mm PVB interlayer. So 17.5mm laminated (8+8) = 20 + 20 + 1.6 ≈ 41.6kg/m². SGP interlayers weigh about the same as PVB for practical purposes. The interlayer is a rounding difference next to the glass itself.
As a rule of thumb with suction lifters: under 25kg — one person; 25–50kg — two; 50–100kg — three to four or mechanical aids; over 100kg — vacuum hoist, glass robot or crane. Most frameless balustrade panels in 17.5–21.5mm laminated land in the 50–90kg band. Awkward access — stairs, upper floors, over walls — pushes the requirement up a level regardless of weight.
Heavier panels need more installers or mechanical lifting equipment, take longer to position with millimetre precision, and may require subframe or floor-edge reinforcement to carry the dead load.
