Staircase Removal Cost Calculator UK
Estimate the likely cost to remove an existing staircase before replacement. Covers timber, steel and concrete stairs, internal and external access, cutting, lifting, waste disposal and temporary safety requirements.
This calculator gives an indicative UK budget for removing an existing staircase before a replacement is installed. It is useful for external steel staircases, timber fire escapes, internal timber stairs, old concrete steps and awkward access projects.
Removal cost depends heavily on material, number of flights, access, whether cutting is required, waste disposal, temporary protection and whether the staircase is currently serving tenants or forming part of a fire escape route. For complete replacement pricing, see our cost to replace staircase UK calculator and external staircase cost guide.

What Affects Staircase Removal Cost?
Material and Fixings
Timber stairs are usually easier to remove than welded steel or concrete. Anchors, brackets, old welds and hidden fixings can increase labour time.
Access and Handling
Rear gardens, basements, London parking, narrow alleys and manual handling can cost more than the removal itself because everything takes longer.
Waste and Safety
Skip hire, mixed waste, concrete, temporary barriers and tenant access arrangements are commonly missed when comparing removal quotes.
Staircase Removal Cost — Common Questions
How much does it cost to remove a staircase in the UK?
Simple timber staircase removal can start from around £450–£900 + VAT. External steel staircase removal is commonly £950–£2,500 + VAT depending on access, cutting and waste. Complex concrete, welded, restricted-access or fire escape removals can exceed £3,000 + VAT.
Is waste disposal included in staircase removal?
Not always. Some quotes assume the client handles waste, while others include skip hire, loading and disposal. Always confirm whether timber, steel, glass, concrete or mixed waste is included before comparing quotes.
Why does external staircase removal cost more?
External staircase removal often involves rusted fixings, heavy steel sections, restricted rear access, cutting, lifting, scaffold or tenant safety measures. Base plates and wall fixings may also require careful removal to avoid damaging the building.
Can the old staircase be removed on the same day as the new one is installed?
Sometimes, but not always. For simple replacements, removal and installation can often be coordinated together. For fire escapes, tenant access, concrete breakout, restricted access or heavy lifting, removal may need a separate planned phase.
Is temporary access needed when removing a fire escape staircase?
It may be. If the staircase is part of a means of escape or is used by tenants, temporary access, tenant coordination or alternative escape arrangements may be required. This should be discussed with the responsible person, fire risk assessor or Building Control where relevant.
What photos are needed for a removal quote?
Send photos of the full staircase, fixing points, top and bottom landings, base plates, wall connections, access route, parking/loading area, restricted gates or alleys, and any welded, concrete, corroded or damaged areas.
Can Continox remove the existing staircase and supply the replacement?
Depending on the project, Continox can include removal as part of a wider replacement staircase package or discuss it separately during survey. For external stairs and fire escapes, the removal method is usually confirmed after reviewing photos and access conditions. Start with our quote request form.
