External Staircase Specification Builder
Build a practical outline specification for an external staircase before requesting a quote. Choose use case, layout, structure, finish, treads, balustrade, width and compliance context — then copy the generated brief.
This builder is focused on external steel staircases. It avoids indoor-style assumptions and does not treat oak as a standard external tread. For external use, the normal baseline is galvanised steel with checker plate, open mesh/grating, perforated tray or aluminium/composite infill depending on budget and appearance.
For cost guidance, see our external staircase cost guide, fire escape cost guide and planning permission checker.
Build Your External Staircase Specification
Select the options closest to your project. The builder generates a plain-English specification you can copy into an enquiry, architect brief or quote request.
Shape affects fabrication, landings, guarding length, installation time and price. Spiral/helical is normally a specialist option, not a low-cost solution.
Timber/oak is deliberately not a standard option here. If the client requests timber externally, it should be treated as a special detail with maintenance and warranty limitations.
External Staircase Specification
How the Specification Builder Works
Choose Use Case & Shape
Start with the purpose and layout: straight, 90-degree, 180-degree, dog-leg, wrap-around platform or spiral/helical specialist option.
Select External Materials
Choose external-grade finish, tread type and guarding. This version avoids oak as a standard external tread and focuses on durable external options.
Copy the Brief
The tool generates a copy-ready specification that can be sent to Continox, an architect, contractor or managing agent for review.
External Staircase Specification — Common Questions
What external staircase shapes can this builder specify?
The builder covers straight flights, quarter-turn / 90-degree stairs, half-turn / 180-degree stairs, dog-leg layouts, wrap-around platforms and spiral/helical specialist options. Shape affects cost because it changes landing size, guarding length, steelwork, fabrication time and installation method.
Why is oak not a standard external tread option?
Oak can be used externally only as a special design detail, but it is not the normal practical specification for UK external staircases. External timber needs maintenance, drainage, end-grain protection and clear warranty expectations. For standard external stairs, galvanised checker plate, open mesh/grating, perforated tray or aluminium/composite infill are usually more appropriate.
Is galvanised steel enough for an external staircase?
For most practical external staircases, hot-dip galvanised steel is the correct baseline finish. Powder coating over galvanising is normally chosen where appearance matters, while harsh or coastal exposure may require a more robust coating system.
What tread type is best for an external staircase?
Checker plate is robust and common. Open mesh or grating is useful where drainage and slip resistance are priorities. Perforated tray treads give a cleaner appearance while still allowing water management. Aluminium or composite infill is a more premium external option.
Can glass balustrade be used externally?
Yes, but it should be specified correctly for external use, with suitable glass type, fixings, drainage, edge protection and structural support. See our glass balustrade and glass balustrade regulations pages.
Does an external staircase need Building Regulations approval?
Often yes, especially where the staircase serves a habitable floor, balcony, flat, HMO or fire escape route. Use our staircase compliance checker for initial guidance.
Do I need planning permission for an external staircase?
Sometimes. Planning risk is higher for front elevations, flats, HMOs, conservation areas, listed buildings, separate entrances and visually prominent staircases. Use our external staircase planning permission checker.
