Architekt & Ziviltechniker Resource Library for Austrian Bespoke Staircase Projects
Seven research-grade guides covering OIB Richtlinie 4 compliance, ÖNORM glass specification, regional context across Austria's three premium markets, cold-climate steel grades and substrate engineering, plus combined intra-EU logistics and system selection — assembled by the Continox technical team for Austrian design professionals.
·Regulatory·Regional·Technical·Implementation·
This is the Continox Austria resource center — a focused library of seven research-grade guides for Austrian Architekten, Ziviltechniker für Bauwesen, Tragwerksplaner and developers specifying bespoke modern Stiegen. Unlike generic supplier collateral, this library is structured around the actual specification journey: regulatory framework first, regional context second, the technical realities of cold climate and altbau substrate third, and finally intra-EU implementation.
For the product range, system catalogue and complete project gallery visit the Modern Staircase Austria hub. For matching balustrades and railings see glass balustrades, balcony railings and external staircases.
Austrian Compliance Framework
The two pillar guides covering Austria's federal OIB Richtlinie 4 framework (which all 9 Bundesländer reference via Landesbauordnung) and the ÖNORM-harmonised glass balustrade standard. Foundation reading — referenced throughout every other guide.
OIB Richtlinie 4 & Austrian Staircase Regulations Guide
The complete OIB Richtlinie 4 framework — Stiegenlaufbreite, Steigungsverhältnis (17/29 cm typical), pasamanos requirements, Wohnbau Klasse 1–5 classification, Fluchtniveau analysis, plus the 9 Landesbauordnung overlay (Wien BauO, Tiroler BO, Salzburger BO etc.).
- Stiegenlaufbreite by Wohnbau Klasse
- OIB Richtlinie 2 fire-resistance (REI 30/60/90)
- Bundesländer Landesbauordnung overlay
- Bauanzeige & Schlussüberprüfung process
Glass Balustrade Regulations Austria (ÖNORM B 3716)
The complete glass spec framework — ÖNORM B 3716 absturzsichernde Verglasung, ÖNORM EN 14449 laminated VSG, ÖNORM EN 12150 ESG-tempered, ÖNORM EN 12600 1B1 impact, heat-soak per ÖNORM EN 14179, plus the Continox supply matrix for Austrian projects.
- ÖNORM B 3716 Kategorie A/B/C
- VSG thicknesses by application
- Heat-soak for alpine & external installations
- Cold climate thermal loading
Austria's Three Premium Markets
Three regional guides covering Austria's distinct premium staircase markets — from Wien Gründerzeit altbau insertion and Niederösterreich villa belt, through Tirol & Vorarlberg ultra-luxury alpine chalets (Kitzbühel, Lech, Zürs), to Salzburg & Salzkammergut heritage premium (Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee). Each guide covers project archetypes, neighborhood profiles, system specification logic, and the Bundesland regulatory overlay.

Wien & Niederösterreich
Capital region. Innere Stadt Gründerzeit duplex insertion, Döbling Cottageviertel villas, Hietzing Schönbrunn-side, Wienerwald, Klosterneuburg, Mödling premium contemporary.

Tirol & Vorarlberg Alpine
Ultra-luxury alpine. Kitzbühel Bichlalm, Aurach, Lech am Arlberg, Zürs, Sölden Skigebiet, Innsbruck-Igls, Bregenzerwald Baukultur, Schruns Montafon.

Salzburg & Salzkammergut
Heritage premium & lakeside. Salzburg Altstadt UNESCO insertion, Aigen, Anif estates, Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee waterfront, Bad Ischl historic, Hallstatt premium.
Intra-EU Supply & System Selection
A single combined guide covering both intra-EU B2B logistics into Austria (no Brexit friction, reverse-charge USt., 2–3 day transit via Bayern/Salzburg corridor) and the floating-vs-central-spine system decision framework. We merged these two topics because Austrian architects rarely separate "how does it ship" from "what shall I specify" — both become real at the same moment in the project.
Architect & Tragwerksplaner Questions
The questions Austrian design professionals ask us most often when first engaging on a project. For deeper coverage, follow the linked guides above.
Does OIB Richtlinie 4 apply equally in all 9 Bundesländer?
Federally yes — OIB Richtlinie 4 is the unified Austrian framework. But each Bundesland's Landesbauordnung references it via a local implementation act, so submission process, Bauanzeige forms and Schlussüberprüfung procedure differ. AT01 covers all 9.
What's the minimum Stiegenlaufbreite for a single-family residence?
Under OIB Richtlinie 4 for Wohnbau Klasse 1 (single-family), the practical minimum useable Laufbreite is typically 90 cm. Notwendige Stiegen in Wohnbau Klasse 4–5 (multi-storey residential) require wider — covered in AT01.
Is Brexit relevant when ordering from Continox?
No. Continox manufactures in Poland (EN 1090-1 EXC2 facility near Kraków), so deliveries to Austria are intra-EU B2B with reverse-charge USt., zero customs declarations, no Brexit paperwork. AT07 covers the full process.
Why does cold climate matter for steel grade selection?
Standard S355JR fails its Charpy impact test below −20 °C, which makes it inappropriate for unheated alpine projects above ~1,500 m. S355J0 holds to −20 °C, J2 to −30 °C. AT06 covers the engineering threshold logic.
Can a Continox spine cantilever be anchored into Gründerzeit Mauerwerk?
Often yes, but with substrate verification. Late-19th-century brick (Wienerberger) typically tests at compressive strength sufficient for chemical anchoring, but a Befund by a Tragwerksplaner is required. AT06 covers the anchor capacity reality.
How long does a typical Austrian project take from quotation to installation?
Standard timeline: quotation in 48 working hours, technical drawings 2 weeks after order, manufacture 6–8 weeks, delivery 2–3 days, installation 2–3 days. Total: ~12 weeks from signed order to commissioning.
